A POLICEMAN'S LOT

Hello, my name's Graham.

I worked for the Greater Manchester Police for nearly 24 years as both a Police Officer and civilian. This site outlines my service with the police.

I was medically retired from the Greater Manchester Police with just short of 20 years service following a neck injury suffered on duty. This injury required neurosurgery and I much later discovered had left me with spinal cord damage. I was re-employed by the Police as a civilian Scenes of Crime Officer, a job for which I was already trained and was in post, as a detective, prior to my initial retirement from the Police.

I returned to work in the same office at the same desk but earning about £7000 per annum less.

My condition having initially improved following surgery then deteriorated. It was at this point it was discovered I had suffered a spinal cord injury and I was again retired for a second time. Injury is an occupational hazard for a Police Officer. I would rather I wasn't injured, but I accept that I took a risk and lost. A large number of officers are injured and it was a part of the job of which I was well aware. It's just one of those things that you think will never happen to you.
