Third Sunday of Easter
Dear Friends,
I would like to call today’s Gospel one of the best lessons in humanity we can find in scripture. The (despondent) disciples told the story of how they came to recognise Jesus in the breaking of the bread. The kingdom that Jesus had spoken about was now a long way away, or was it only words?
Parents give good advice to their children often because they themselves had to learn from their mistakes and what the children want is a quick fix and they want it now. If only it were possible. The Lord helps us over time understand that there are no easy answers or quick solutions. Our understanding of Jesus must be built on solid ground. Things we have to learn, that we need each other on life’s journey, that we must have patience, we must be responsible for our own decisions, that love grows out of many reconciliations (the need to say sorry) and that there is no peace without justice. Our parents and teachers lead us faithfully and patiently, yet we learn by our mistakes. Lord we dream of a more peaceful and better society – let it begin with us.
