Welcome to Welton-by-Lincoln Parish Council

Village Signs with flowers

Welcome to the village of Welton-by-Lincoln website. It provides practical information on the local community and its services and facilities. The current population is around 6000 residing in approximately 2000 homes. The village is situated six miles north-east of Lincoln. Visitors will be struck by the large number of new houses and estates at the outskirts of the village, but it still retains its earlier stone-built centre, clustered around the tree-filled village green. Here you will find the St Mary's Church, Methodist Chapel, the Black Bull pub, shops including a Co-op food store and health centre.

The very name ‘Welton’ reveals something of the antiquity of this village. It is possible there was a Roman farmstead in the area and fragments of pottery from that period have been found. However, the suffix ‘ton’ is a Saxon term for an enclosure and ‘Wel’ is from the Anglo Saxon ‘wella’, a place of springing or bubbling waters, hence the name Welton. The village remained famous for its wells right into the twentieth century and there may have been several such ‘enclosures by the well’ in Lincolnshire. The County also has Welton-in-the-Marsh and Welton-le-Wold, but this particular settlement was distinguished by being known as Welton-by-Lincoln.

Today Welton-by-Lincoln is a self-sufficient village with lots of clubs and organisations for people of all ages. It has a very active Twinning Association maintaining links with Moncé en Belin in France and not only is this marked through one of the road names in the village – an Avenue de Welton exists in the twin village – there is also a French post box on the wall of the Parish Council office. Despite the great changes which have taken place, Welton-by-Lincoln is still a peaceful village, popular with families whose children can complete their education without moving away and equally popular with retired people who enjoy all that it has to offer.
